On April 13, the Maryland SkillsUSA Maryland State Carpentry Competitions were held. The competition is a showcase for the best career and technical students locally and nationally.
Leonard Ferguson, a plumbing student at Western School of Technology & Environmental Science won 1st place in the plumbing competition. Leonard works for G. E. Tignall & Co., Inc. and Leonard is a registered apprentice in ABC Greater Baltimore school to apprenticeship program.
For over 30 years, ABC Baltimore and its member companies have sponsored the competition. The contestants are administered written tests and are judged on a wood and metal carpentry project. ABC Baltimore’s Michelle Butt judged the projects, Wayne Temple of Oak Contracting, and Michael Walker of Lewis Contractors judged the projects.
Dai Wei Chen of Carroll County Career and Technology Center won first place in the competition, while Brandyn Crum of Washington County Technical High School placed second, and Joseph Dietrich of Thomas Edison High School of Technology placed third. Chen will compete in the national competition that takes place in Louisville, KY in June.
