Habitat Humanity of the Chesapeake and Project JumpStart launched The HabiCorps Workforce Development Program, which, with support from AmeriCorps, trains Baltimore City residents that face significant barriers to employment in the construction trades.
The HabiCorps traineeship provides hands-on experience in the construction trades over the course of ten months. Under the supervision of skilled instructors, HabiCorps trainees work in small teams on a variety of projects, gaining hands-on experience in demolition and renovation of existing structures and new construction.
“HabiCorps addresses several critical needs in the city,” said Mike Posko, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake, which has helped more than 700 Baltimore-area families become homeowners. “We’re providing training and support on the path to well-paying trade careers, while also building affordable housing in underserved communities. It’s a 360-degree approach- investing in individuals and neighborhoods they call home.”
Vital to HabiCorps’ success is Project JumpStart, which refers graduates from its workforce development program. While the majority of its graduates are placed into permanent construction jobs, some need additional on-the-job experience. HabiCorps offers the critical bridge for these individuals, ensuring they receive the training they need.”
