Each year, the Women in ABC Committee awards exemplary young women entering a construction-related trade with an award of $2000. This year, out of 15 applicants, the committee awarded two very deserving young women with a scholarship; Rachel Solak and Keely Barkell.
Keely Barkell, Winters Mill High School graduate, will be attending The Catholic University of America where she will study architecture at the bachelor and master level with dreams of becoming a certified architect so she can open her own firm that focuses on sustainable design. Keely, an honors student, was a member of the National Art Honors Society, the drama club, a peer leader in the ‘Sources of Strength’ program, and a prticipant in Hord Coplan Macht’s ‘Architect for a Day’ program. Keely also designed a metal Luna Moth statue that will be installed at the Beer Brand Nature Center in Maryland in remembrance of a fallen soldier.
Rachel Solak, a Fallston High School graduate, will be attending University of Pittsburgh in the fall majoring in Mechanical Engineering with minors in Spanish and Sustainability. Rachel, an outstanding student, was on her school’s honor roll, an active member of the Math and Science National Honor Society, Treasurer of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, played varsity volleyball, indoor track, lacrosse, and was the tenor saxophone section leader. Rachel is also involved in her community and participated in Best Buddies, Vacation Bible School, and Harford Glen Outdoor Education Center.
