The Women of ABC Committee partnered with the Home Depot in Cockeysville to provide local young women from Baltimore County Schools with hands-on activities and insight into the construction industry.
The day began with the hosts, Aisha and Debbie from Home Depot, telling inspiring stories about their journey through the construction industry. This allowed the students to see that Home Depot careers are not just cashiers and trade specialists on a store level, but also include many behind-the-scene roles at a local and corporate level that they may not have been aware of prior to today’s event.
Next, hands-on activities were guided by TJ, who gave the students insight on different tools used in the industry and safety precautions which are necessary when using these tools.
The students toured the store next and could speak with all of the department workers including Toni, a female who manages the paint department. The students were captivated by Toni’s perspective on being able to apply her creativity to helping customers with their paint and finishing choices. Toni also emphasized the importance of being a strong woman in a male-dominated field.
Throughout the tour, Debbie provided information on the business side of retail such as building and maintaining customer relationships, motivating team members as a supervisor, understanding your store’s needs based on demographics.
The young women were exposed to new careers and opportunities within the construction industry.
Thank you to Sara Johnson with Ariosa & Co. for putting this event together!
