Plano-Coudon Construction captured the General Contractor Project of the Year for National Aquarium Animal Care and Rescue Center. This LEED Silver, Animal Care and Rescue Center facility is a 50,000 SF interior renovation of an old printing company building that includes a 15,000 SF mezzanine addition, in the historic Jonestown neighborhood of Baltimore. The new, 15,000 sf steel supported mezzanine is used for storage and administrative space, with a future potential for expansion. On the main level, new space was created for seal rescue and rehabilitation, and bird/herp holding with all associated support systems, as well as an exhibit fabrication/ wood shop, lab/classroom for visitors, and more storage space. The use of the main level is for non-quarantine and quarantine animal holding. This involved a specialty Life Support Systems contractor from Florida to install localized heat exchangers, tanks, and filtration systems to support each specific species. On the exterior of the building, a new roof, signage, a loading dock area, and natural gas backup generator to support the animals in emergencies if the power were to go out was installed (Project video below).

Project of the year for Specialty Contractor went to Ariosa & Company for Saint Margaret School Mechanical System Replacement. Ariosa was awarded the project at Saint Margaret School the first week of April 2018 and the completion date was September 9, 2018 – with the substantial completion date of August 18th. To achieve this monumental task, a crew of 50 pipefitters, plumbers, electricians, sheet metal mechanics, drywall hangers and painters amongst several other trades had to be orchestrated precisely working 12 hours a day six days a week. Another important factor of the project was Ariosa’s daily communication with the project manager from the Archdiocese, engineer, and the end user of the school. The expedited installation time of all equipment and a new BGE electrical service was also an enormous challenge. (Project video below).
